Autumn Apple Cocktail

One of my favorite drinks to make for friends around the holidays is the Autumn Apple. This tart, refreshing, and beautifully presented drink has many layers of flavor including those of ginger, lemon, apple, whiskey, and even a hint of coconut.

Ingredients

  • 1 and 1/2 ounces St. George Single Malt Whiskey
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 ounce Nana Mae’s Organics Gravenstein Apple Juice or other organic apple juice
  • 1/2 ounce ginger simple syrup (recipe below)
  • 1/4 ounce Aqua Perfecta Pear Eau de Vie or any poire william brandy

Preparation

Pour all ingredients into a mixing glass, stir well, add enough ice to fill the glass entirely, shake hard for seven seconds, then strain into a chilled martini glass.

Top with Apple-Coconut Foam, Dehydrated Apple Chips, and edible flowers (I like marigold petals or rosemary blossoms).

Makes one drink.

About this recipe

One of my favorite drinks to make for friends around the holidays is the Autumn Apple. This tart, refreshing, and beautifully presented drink has many layers of flavor including those of ginger, lemon, apple, whiskey, and even a hint of coconut. In my book, ARTISANAL COCKTAILS: Drinks Inspired by the Seasons from the Bar at Cyrus (Ten Speed Press), I suggested using Germain-Robin’s Apple Brandy, a small batch distillate made in Ukiah, as the primary spirit in this concoction.

While I love the apple brandy (or Calvados) version of this drink, I have recently discovered that the combination of St. George Single Malt Whiskey and a touch of Aqua Perfecta Pear Eau de Vie, both hand crafted at St. George Spirits in Alameda, makes for an equally exciting result.

To make it especially local, make sure to use the delicious, organic Gravenstein apple juice produced by Sebastopol’s Nana Mae’s Organics.

The Apple-Coconut Foam, Dehydrated Apple Chips, and edible flowers are optional touches but well worth the extra effort.
